Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC Announces New Managers The Members of Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC (SEK&Co), are pleased to announce Peter O. McDonald, CPA and Jessica L. Mihalov, CPA were recently promoted to the position of Manager with the firm.
Peter O. McDonald, CPA was promoted from Supervisor to Manager. Peter earned his Baccalaureate in Commerce degree with honors in Accounting from the University of Ottawa, in Canada. He joined SEK&Co in 2000 and works with the firm’s small business and individual clients providing accounting, consulting and tax services. Peter is based in the Hagerstown, Maryland location, but as a member of the firm’s Accounting Services Committee, he is an active resource for staff members in all four SEK&Co office locations.
Jessica L. Mihalov, CPA, MBA was promoted from Supervisor to Manager. Jess graduated cum laude from Shippensburg University with a Master’s of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, majoring in accounting. She joined SEK&Co in 2006 and serves audit clients in the Carlisle, Pennsylvania office.

Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC Announces Promotions The Members of Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC, Certified Public Accountants and Consultants, are pleased to announce the following promotions, which were effective 1/1/12.
PROMOTED TO SUPERVISOR
Margaret E. Eldridge, CPA, MBA was promoted from Senior Associate to Supervisor. Margie joined SEK&Co in 2005 after receiving her master’s degree in business administration and bachelor’s degree in accounting from York College of Pennsylvania. She works in the Hanover office providing individual, small business and estate tax services.
Shannon K. Geiman, CPA was promoted from Senior Associate to Supervisor. Shannon graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in accounting. She joined SEK&Co’s Hanover, Pennsylvania office in 2009, bringing with her 15 years of accounting experience. She specializes in providing the firm’s small business clients with tax preparation, planning and consulting services.
MaryBeth Hockenberry, MBA was promoted from Senior Associate to Supervisor. MaryBeth earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in business administration from Frostburg State University. She joined SEK&Co’s Hanover, Pennsylvania office in 2009 and specializes in assisting clients with business and individual tax consulting, planning and preparation services.
Leighton P. Stiffler was promoted from Senior Associate to Supervisor. Leighton earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Pennsylvania State University in 2005. He joined SEK’s Carlisle office in 2008 and works in the Audit Department where his primary focus has been on nonprofits and governmental entities. Prior to joining SEK&Co Leighton worked for Boyer and Ritter CPA’s in Carlisle (6/05 – 7/07) and Holy Spirit Hospital (6/07 – 10/08).
PROMOTED TO SENIOR ASSOCIATE
Amy K. Brousse, CPA was promoted from Staff Associate to Senior Associate. Amy graduated summa cum laude from Shippensburg University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, majoring in accounting. She joined SEK&Co’s Chambersburg, Pennsylvania office in January 2010 and works with banking clients providing audit and bank tax return services.
Tyler L. Clugston was promoted from Staff Associate to Senior Associate. Tyler graduated summa cum laude from Shippensburg University, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in accounting. He joined the audit department of the Chambersburg, Pennsylvania office full time in 2009 after successfully completing internships with SEK&Co. Tyler provides services to both audit and tax clients.
Jennifer G. Day was promoted from Staff Associate to Senior Associate. Jennifer joined SEK&Co on a full-time basis in 2010 after completing a successful internship with the firm. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, majoring in accounting, from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Jennifer primarily works with audit clients and helps with a variety of tax projects in the firm’s Hanover, Pennsylvania office.
Nicole E. Shives was promoted from Staff Associate to Senior Associate. Nicole graduated magna cum laude from DeVry University, earning a bachelor’s degree in technical management with emphasis in Accounting. She joined SEK&Co’s Chambersburg, Pennsylvania office in 2008 and works with banking clients providing audit and bank tax return services.
Mark A. Hill was promoted from Staff Associate to Senior Associate. Mark earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Elizabethtown College. He came to the Carlisle, Pennsylvania office of SEK&Co with two years of audit experience. Mark specializes in auditing, with particular interest in non-profit clients.
PROMOTED TO STAFF ASSOCIATE
Jaimie S. Kaufman was promoted from Accounting/Bookkeeping Associate to Staff Associate. Jaimie earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Shippensburg University with a dual major in accounting and management information systems. She joined SEK&Co’s Carlisle, Pennsylvania office in 2009 and works with the firm’s small business and individual clients providing accounting, consulting and tax services.
Ashley N. Poole was promoted from the firm’s accounting clerk to Staff Associate. Ashley earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Keiser University in Daytona Beach, Florida. She has served as the accounting clerk for SEK&Co in the Administrative office since 2010 and will work in the tax/accounting service department of the firm’s Hagerstown, Maryland office.
PROMOTED TO SUPERVISING ACCOUNTANT
Deborah L. Meckley was promoted from Accounting/Bookkeeping Associate to Supervising Accountant. Deb graduated from York Technical Institute, York, Pennsylvania with an associate’s degree in Accounting. She joined the Hanover, Pennsylvania office of SEK&Co in 2000 and works with payroll and QuickBooks clients, and supervises the accounting service practice. Deb is also a certified ProAdvisor in QuickBooks, and is the Hanover representative to the firm’s ACTS committee.

Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC Named One Of The 2011 Best Places To Work For Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC was recently named as one of the 2011 Best Accounting Firms to Work for. The annual list of “Best Accounting Firms” was created by Accounting Today and Best Companies Group.
This survey and award program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in the accounting industry, benefiting the nation's economy, its workforce and businesses. The Best Accounting Firms to Work for list is made up of a total of 100 companies, split into three groups: 50 small-sized companies (15-49 employees), 45 medium-sized companies (50-249 employees) and 5 large-sized companies (more than 250 employees). Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC has been named one of the Best Accounting Firms to Work for in the medium category.
To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:
- Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business;
- Be a publicly or privately held business;
- Have a facility in the United States;
- Have at least 15 employees working in the United States;
- Must be in business a minimum of 1 year;
- Be an accounting firm.
Accounting firms from across the country entered the two-part survey process to determine the Best Accounting Firms to Work for. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated firm's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top firms and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration, survey and analysis process and determined the final rankings.
The ranking of the 4th annual Best Accounting Firms to Work for will be unveiled at an awards ceremony sponsored by ADP during Accounting Today’s 2nd Annual Growth & Profitability Summit on October 25th – October 27th at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The list-making firms will also be published in the December issue of Accounting Today.

SEK&Co Associate Member Kara Darlington Named Central PA Women of Influence Award Recipient Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC is proud to announce that Associate Member of the Firm, Kara M. Darlington, CPA has been named one of Central Pennsylvania’s most influential women in the Central Penn Business Journal’s Women of Influence Awards Program.
Twenty-five local women business leaders have been selected to receive the 2011 award recognizing their outstanding leadership, integrity and accomplishments in the midstate’s business community.
Kara began her career in public accounting with SEK&Co after graduating magna cum laude from York College of Pennsylvania in 1997. She quickly took on extended responsibilities as a staff accountant and pursued a specialization in auditing, earned her CPA license, and rapidly worked her way to various leadership positions within the firm. Kara was elected as an Associate Member of the Firm January 1, 2010, becoming the first woman Member to be elected since 1986 and one of only three women to serve as a Member in the firm’s 48-year history.
Kara specializes in providing accounting and auditing services to insurance companies, nonprofit organizations and employee benefit plans. Kara manages the Hanover office audit practice as well as a significant number of the firm’s employee benefit plan audit engagements.
Kara was recognized for her career accomplishments, leadership abilities, vision, community service, and mentoring.
The Women of Influence awards were created in 2010 to recognize midstate women leaders who are influential in their companies, industries and communities. An independent panel of judges selected the 25 award recipients who have established a solid reputation based on their experience, integrity and leadership, and have a proven track record of accomplishments.

SEK&Co Completes Successful Peer Review Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC was recently notified by the Peer Review Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) that it has successfully completed an independent peer review of its accounting and auditing practice.
"Peer reviews are required for membership in the AICPA and by the state of Maryland Board of Public Accountancy and are conducted every three years," according to Edward L. Buchanan IV, CPA, Managing Member of SEK&Co. "We are certainly pleased with successfully completing our tenth peer review, especially with the ongoing scrutiny of the quality of audit work conducted by the accounting profession."
The peer review was conducted by the national firm of Cherry Bekaert & Holland under the guidelines established by the AICPA. The reviewers made an independent assessment of the firm’s quality control policies and procedures and inspected the working papers and reports on a representative sample of accounting and auditing engagements. They also inspected the firm’s administrative files and records and interviewed professional personnel.
Michael P. Manspeaker, CPA, SEK&Co’s Director of Accounting, Auditing and Quality Control, stated, "We are very pleased that we received the highest rating possible with no letter of comments, which puts SEK&Co in an extremely elite group of CPA firms."
